@lowk475: Earth has a natural protection system called the magnetic field, or magnetosphere. It surrounds our planet and helps protect us from dangerous particles coming from the Sun. The Sun is always releasing energy and charged particles into space, which is called the solar wind. Sometimes the Sun also has powerful eruptions called solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which can send even more energy and particles toward Earth. When these charged particles reach Earth, our magnetic field pushes most of them away. This is very important because without this protection, much more harmful radiation and particles could reach Earth. Our atmosphere also plays a huge part in protecting life from radiation coming from space. Some of the particles from the Sun get guided by Earth’s magnetic field toward the North and South Poles. When they reach the upper atmosphere, they crash into gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. These gases release energy as light, creating the northern lights, also called the aurora borealis. The different gases and heights can create different colors, including green, red, purple and blue. This is why strong activity from the Sun can sometimes cause brighter northern lights that can be seen farther away from the poles.
