23 years ago we thought we were adults. We thought we were ready for anything. Our story had begun back in 1995 and in all honesty there have been some serious twists and turns. In 2003 I somehow convinced him we were grown and it was time to get married and have babies. We were babies. We knew nothing. We had nothing. We were ready for NOTHING. Our weeding reception took place in a YMCA where we had to pay the caterer and the DJ with the money guests had given us as wedding presents. We’ve had three babies who are now young adults. We’ve bought and lost houses. We’ve gone belly up and had to start over. We’ve fought. We’ve cried. We’ve celebrated. And this past year I watched my husband suffer a traumatic injury and for a few short months I was his care taker. Not like how one spouse cares for another. An actual caretaker. I only did it for 3 months, I honesty don’t know how people manage to do that for years on end. I’d love to say something sweet and remarkable about how we choose eachother each day, but that would be a lie. Some days we completely miss the mark. Some days we are selfish and choose ourselves. Some days we are so tired we can’t choose anything at all. But…I do know that I don’t want anyone else by my side. I don’t want to fight this fight with anyone but him. I want to keep finding our way to eachother despite our differences and despite our shortcomings. We had an awful fight this morning, not a great way to start an anniversary. There was yelling. There was anger. There was pain. But…we hit pause. We each took 15 minutes to reset, and then we leaned in towards each other. We may never be “couples” goals, but I’m good with that. I just want to do my part to keep growing and changing into the human who helps him achieve his goals and our goals. I don’t want to do this life with anyone else. We’re not kids anymore but there is always a lot to learn.
