@slideshowhistorian: Sparked in remote boreal forest and deliberately left largely unfought due to its isolated location, the Chinchaga Fire burned for months across a huge stretch of Canadian wilderness in 1950. The resulting smoke plume was so massive it caused the sun to appear blue or lavender across parts of Europe thousands of kilometers away, and it remains the largest recorded wildfire in North American history. Fueled by an unusually dry spring and strong winds, the Black Dragon Fire tore through forest along the China-Soviet border in 1987, killing hundreds and leaving over 50,000 residents homeless. The disaster directly led to major reforms in Chinese forest management and remains one of the largest and deadliest forest fires of the 20th century. A combination of extreme drought and limited firefighting resources across Russia's remote regions allowed wildfires to spread across an almost incomprehensible stretch of forest in 2003, with smoke detected as far as the northeastern United States. Precise figures remain difficult to confirm, but it's widely regarded as one of the largest wildfire events ever recorded on Earth. Following severe drought, the "Black Summer" bushfires burned across a huge stretch of eastern and southern Australia in 2019-2020, destroying thousands of homes and killing an estimated one billion or more animals. Smoke blanketed major cities including Sydney and Canberra for weeks, making it one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in modern history. And an extraordinarily dry spring combined with an early start to fire season triggered simultaneous major wildfires across nearly every Canadian province at once in 2023, requiring assistance from thousands of international firefighters. Smoke drifted deep into the US, turning skies orange as far as New York City, making it the most destructive wildfire season ever recorded in Canadian history. #History #worldhistory #naturaldisasters #wildfire
