@drjoe_science: A New Era of Human Biology... #biology #biochemistry Do not miss out. So much has changed in the last year already. And we are teaming up with elite scientists around the world to make sure the public hear what we discover.
js when I FUCKING start uni, biology got a fucking update🥀🥀

most of these things were discovered around 1976-2010 except for the important part which was about the microproteins. you didnt mention the actual breakthrough, which is that 2853 new microproteins were catalogued this year

For years, I’ve been saying that calling what we think of as “noncoding” DNA “junk DNA” is very pretentious. It’s like calling organs that we once thought were vestigial simply because we didn’t yet know their functions. It turned out that, one by one, we discovered functions for many of those organs, and the number of organs considered vestigial decreased over time.
So, scientists who label DNA as “junk” simply because they don’t yet know what it does are essentially admitting that they don’t understand it while arrogantly acting as though they do. It’s like someone who only knows basic computer coding looking at advanced code and, because of their lack of knowledge and understanding, labeling it as gibberish that does nothing.
I believe the same thing happened with “junk DNA,” because of an evolutionary bias. If someone assumes evolution must operate through randomness and trial and error, then it is easy to assume that our genome must contain genetic “waste” produced by random mutations and natural selection.
In the future, the idea of “junk DNA” may be regarded as outdated or even laughable. Our DNA is the most sophisticated code we have ever encountered, far more complex than anything humans have ever created.

I really think we need to get away from "science was wrong!!" as the framing for every new discovery. epigenetic expression and junk DNA not being junk DNA are concepts that have been around, I think that state of knowledge has always been held as a provisional snapshot of a picture that necessarily is going to grow over time. there are charitable ways of reading the interaction between new research and old research that doesn't turn the former into a revolutionary upheaval over the latter, which is important because Well-Meaning and not so well-meaning people sometimes mistakenly interpret updates or revisions as meaning we shouldn't be confident in the conclusions of science.

it was kinda weird that everyone unanimously ignored the weird lil parts of dna and said they dont do anything istg we live in a simulation and this is just a new update😭🙏

"we thought one stretch of DNA only encoded for one thing" I dunno I thought that pleiotropy was a well established thing. like, fr, this simplistic one gene → one phenotype map is something that at least more theoretically-minded biologists never really believed, or at least have not believed for many decades now. perhaps lab people have been trained to think like this because....?? I really don't know enough about biology in the lab, but I've been studying it's history and theory for a while and I'm feeling perplexed
