Investigators later described the car as a “rolling sniper’s nest.” For weeks, schools changed routines, gas stations became places of fear, and hundreds of law-enforcement officers joined the investigation. The case became one of the most intense criminal investigations in recent U.S. history. The breakthrough came when investigators connected fingerprint evidence to Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 years old at the time. That connection eventually led authorities to Muhammad and their Chevrolet Caprice. Early on October 24, 2002, police located the vehicle at a rest area off Interstate 70 in Maryland. Muhammad and Malvo were found sleeping inside and were arrested without a struggle, bringing the 23-day manhunt to an end.
