Lewis Hamilton's father worked multiple jobs at once — sometimes three or four simultaneously — just to fund his son's early karting career, in a sport that offered no guarantee it would ever turn into anything. At ten years old, Hamilton approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis and told him he wanted to drive for his team one day. Dennis gave him his number and told him to call in nine years. Most kids make a bold statement like that and never follow up on it. Hamilton did. He kept racing, kept winning at every level beneath Formula 1, until McLaren signed him to their young driver program years later. He debuted in F1 in 2007 and won his first World Championship the following season. He's gone on to tie the record for the most championships in the sport's history, and holds the record for most wins. None of that happened because a ten-year-old made a confident statement. It happened because the years between that conversation and the first race were filled with the unglamorous work required to actually deserve the seat.
