Timothy B. Schmit is one of the most important members of the Eagles, even though he joined the band later than the original lineup. Born on October 30, 1947, in Oakland, California, Schmit grew up around Sacramento and became interested in music from a young age. Before joining the Eagles, he made a name for himself with the country-rock group Poco, where he replaced Randy Meisner on bass and vocals. Remarkably, history repeated itself years later when Schmit replaced Meisner again—this time in the Eagles in 1977. Schmit joined shortly after the hugely successful Hotel California period and became an essential part of the band's bass playing and famous vocal harmonies. His relationship with Glenn Frey is particularly interesting because Schmit had actually worked with Frey and Don Henley before becoming an Eagle. They had all been involved in Linda Ronstadt's musical circle in the 1970s. Once Schmit joined the Eagles, he and Glenn spent decades recording and touring together. Schmit co-wrote and sang lead on “I Can't Tell You Why” with Frey and Henley, giving him one of the band's most memorable vocal performances. His softer, higher voice provided a perfect contrast to Frey's and Henley's voices. Schmit also developed a long musical relationship with Don Henley. While Henley and Frey were the band's principal songwriting partnership, Schmit became an important contributor to the Eagles' harmonies and arrangements. His voice can often be heard blending underneath the lead vocals, helping create the rich sound that became one of the band's trademarks. Joe Walsh was another major part of Schmit's Eagles story. Walsh joined the band shortly before Schmit and brought a completely different personality and guitar style. Schmit was generally quieter and more reserved, while Walsh became known for his humour and eccentric personality. Despite their differences, they became long-term bandmates and important parts of the Eagles' classic sound. Schmit's connection with Randy Meisner is perhaps the most unusual. After replacing Meisner in both Poco and the Eagles, the two musicians later performed together, including “Take It to the Limit,” creating a remarkable full-circle moment. After the Eagles initially broke up, Schmit pursued solo work and released albums including Playin' It Cool and Timothy B. He returned when the Eagles reunited in the 1990s and sang lead on “Love Will Keep Us Alive” from Hell Freezes Over. In 1998, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Eagles. Following Glenn Frey's death in 2016, Schmit became one of the musicians carrying the band's history forward. His career is remarkable because he connects so many chapters of Eagles history: Poco and Randy Meisner, Glenn Frey and Don Henley, Joe Walsh, the original Eagles era, the reunion and the band's later years. He may sometimes be overshadowed by the bigger personalities in the group, but Timothy B. Schmit's voice, bass playing and harmonies are an essential part of what makes the Eagles sound like the Eagles. #glennfrey #donhenley #80smusicthrowback #singersongwriters #oldiesbutgoodies
