The -age rule works a bit better as: one syllable = feminine (la page, la plage, la rage, etc), more than one syllable = masculine (garage, bricolage, concubinage, etc); the only notable exception being une image. In the background, the pattern is basically that the masculine ones occur where the -age is a separate morpheme descended from Latin -aticum (formaticum > fromage) while the feminine ones have other processes going on (pagina > page), but that would involve learning Latin first and working from there so… not really a shortcut as such!
