@holland_ave: Between OT, nursing, SLP, and LCSW which would be the best career to go into and why? I’m stuck between these options and have heard both pros and cons to all of them, still can’t decide 😭 or if any other careers are good lmk!#career #job #ot #nursing #slp
I’ve been in LCSW for 25 years and I hate to say it, but I wish I had chosen something else. SLP, OT or PT would be my go to’s.

We hire all of those positions at our therapeutic summer camp! Come work with us and you can observe and work along side the multi disciplinary teams to see which discipline you like best 😁 our campers come and stay for 7 weeks and work on therapy with pts, ots, slps, and social workers while getting to experience an adaptive summer camp! 🤗

As an SLP, it’s honestly not worth it getting a masters degree bc you’ll be paid the same if not less than nurses. The therapy world is a complete disaster these days and your wages are stagnant despite the enormous amount of debt

I recommend becoming an SLP, but I’m biased. It’s not for everyone, but I love that I can work in a school, hospital, private practice, or even provide therapy on my own. I work in a school and is it hard? Yes. But I have tons of days off, a great pension, I’m backed by a strong union, and my pay is great.

OT pros : pay, best of both worlds as far as cognition and physical rehab CONS: poop, pee, often get stuck w work other rehab (SLP/PT) don’t want to do. Nursing PROS: less school = less debt CONS : burn out :( poop pee, etc SLP PROS: therapy is so fun, get to choose kids or adults, work life balance, no nasty stuff (besides some swallow stuff!) CONS : often get dumped w complex cognitive patients, hard conversations, least common (harder to get advice, etc) LCSW pros : flexibility, meaningful changes CONS : extreme burn out, emotionally and physically. I am a speech pathologist in a nursing home lmk if u have questions :)

Just know it takes foreverrrr to get your lcsw. bachelors, masters, 900 unpaid practicum hours. then post grad you usually need 3,000 hours (depends on the state) and 100 hours of supervision before you can even sit for the exam. I started this process in 2019 and I should finally be done by next year😭🤣

I recommend LCSW!! It offers the most flexibility. I had my employer pay for my MSW and clinical hours- zero debt and most of colleagues make great $. I’ll retire at 57 with a pension and haven’t made under 100k in sooo long. When I retire I’ll continue private practice while traveling. So so flexible.

If you do social work, make sure to get your bachelors in social work so you can do the 1 year advance standing. I did this and happy with it. If you want to make money nursing. Everyone says nurses are burned out but so is every career. At least I am burned out as a social worker. Both social work and nursing are super versatile, you can pretty much work in a lot of fields- like school, community, hospitals, prisons, state hospitals etc.

As an SLP, don’t do SLP unless you work in the medical setting. School setting is the worst. And if you do social work or nursing, make sure you protect your heart because you will see and hear the most vile, heartbreaking things.

This all depends on what you’re passionate about! If you’re passionate about social justice and advocacy - go social work, if you’re passionate about delivering care do nursing, if you’re passionate about helping people gain/regain occupational skills - do OT!

SLPs have job security! you can work remotely, travel, clinics, schools, private practice or choose to work in a hospital. my SLP mentors are retired but work part time remotely for fun. it’s a rewarding job. ❤️
