Horrified to find out they are not air conditioned.

Oh Jesus. I can’t imagine how fucking hot it must be inside the parts that are not air conditioned. If people want to talk about “doing the crime/doing the time” they should really watch The Alabama Solution.

So what was it like during the freeze? I cannot imagine.

Insane that prisons aren’t air conditioned in general. That is cruel and unusual punishment for sure. Also - people can die of heat stroke.

Not everyone is even convicted, if it’s a jail.

I remember talking with a guard yearsss ago about this because not only were inmates suffering but guards were having heat related injuries too. He said they were starting something to change it and I’m glad to see that’s come to fruition.

My dad used to work for a firm that designed the ac systems in prisons here in Texas- the ones that required him to not wear certain color combos & have a body guard when he did site visits. How do so many still not have ac? He had to be meticulous with the designs because the system had to have the capability to pump in pepper spray to break up fights then pump the pepper spray to the outside once clear.

I worked in one of those prisons and I am so glad to hear this. When it was too hot in the afternoons the counseling staff didn’t have to go in the dorms in the afternoon. In winter they only had like windbreakers. It is very inhumane.

Is this for federal prisons, state prisons, or both?

wow! I live in Texas, originally from the Houston area, but now in the hill country, and I never knew our prisons weren’t air conditioned. The heat will absolutely k*ll you in Texas- I’m glad they are making this a priority.

When a state prison was built in my town in the mid 90s they did a couple of tours for people to look inside before it opened. I was absolutely shocked there was no AC. And they were so proud of it. I was like 17/18. I couldn’t imagine. Since then I just imagined it got added on. How sad it didn’t. We are experiencing the hottest summer on record with 60+ days of 100° +. The numbers get worse for other specific stats. But no AC in this is inhumane.

I only knew about prisons not having AC because of my women’s and gender studies classes in college. I’m so happy this is finally happening! I was horrified when I first heard about it 😭

HOUSTON resident here- my house is set at 68° 24/7, during a rolling blackout that lasted 4 1/2-5 hours my house reached 92°. My husband is a paramedic, in a former nurse & he had to call EMS because our teen son and I were showing signs of heat stroke by hour 2- 2 1/2.. Now think about that and then think about a prison that has had ZERO air conditioning prior to the peak of the days temp. & the temperature it would reach in that condition…

It is inhumane and cruel to not have air-conditioning here in Texas. We regularly get above 100°, with heat index of 110°+, for several months every year. If you have to visit a prison for business, well those parts are air-conditioned. Wild.

They have rejected this bill every legislative session for years. Can’t believe something is finally being done about it. Maybe they’ll finally take sodomy out of the Penal Code next 🙃🙃🙃

I guarantee it’s more but they don’t label it that on the death record trying to avoid this situation/ more lawsuits

I’ll never forget being on death row in Parchman. They had a few industrial fans, and It was fall. But I was soaked in sweat, and I was only there for hours.

I couldn't believe it when I found out our main prison down in Mississippi was not air conditioned! It's inhumane! But they have worst issues going on down there. Sanitation issues and moldy food are the norm I believe. It's so wrong and needs to be fixed!
