My angel of a (childless) manager sits with me in July and we go over the school calendar and game out TOGETHER what day I need to be out/out early. We plan our work load out accordingly. I work in non-profit and make next to nothing, but I would ride to hell and back for my boss and my job.

I’m a teacher in NJ but live in DE, and my children’s school released the calendar in June. I counted up over 20 days that they have off and I don’t…AS A TEACHER! 😬🤯

This doesn’t even count all the middle-of-the-school-day special events, parties, performances, field trips, and programs that parents are expected to attend. Of course they’re not mandatory — you’ll just feel like a monster if you miss them!!

As a Canadian I don’t understand these 1/2 days or why there is so many personal development days. We have like maybe 6 a year plus a couple Fridays or Mondays off for stat days.

41 is insane. Here they have PD days approximately once a month, and they don't have half days, so that's like 10 days.

I recently had to quit a job because the management did not understand this. I was given 5 days of PTO, no flexibility (eg come in early to leave early), no work from home (I work in finance in a non client facing role). There was absolutely no way to make it work so I got a fully remote fully flexible schedule job. I know not everyone has that privilege so I don’t know how they do it. The day before I left that job the women in the front office were sitting together crying because they had no idea how they were going to do it. I was offered flexibility finally on my way out the door and I hope they offered that to the women that were trapped in a way I wasn’t.

Call me crazy but I feel like kids have 99% more half days than we did as kids. I swear I remember in school having a half-day maybe once every three or four months. Now your kid seemed to have them more frequently than mine do, mine have one every month.

This is why choosing where you live matters. The district i am in (in MA) does not have 1/2 days. The district has before school care (at the schools) that starts at 630am and after school care that ends at 6pm all the way through 8th grade. We have late busses 3x a week for kids to stay for clubs (1hr later)and still take a buss home. The h.s has late busses 4x a week (no fri) at 330 and at 5 pm for all students that stay for help, sports or whatever. Choosing your district is more important than your house!

YES!!! So many non-school days. We also have a lot of days that just elementary school is out, so the school offered care is limited because their HS staff is still in school! There are also SO MANY events and things! We’re 3 weeks into the year and between my kindergartener, senior and freshman, we’ve had 2 PTA meetings, 2 school events and 4 informational nights!

We were there for a teacher conference day and a kid got dropped off like a normal day. He tried to open the door - we shared school was closed. He chased his moms vehicle but obviously way too late. My husband ran after him. We asked if he knew his family's number, he didn't. Luckily office staff was in and could find that info. He was 2-3rd grade.

And whatever you buy for dress up days buy it a size bigger. For example if your kid is a 5T buy a 6. That way it’s a little big for kinder, fits perfect for 1st and a little small for 2nd. The ugly sweater, book charter, 100 yr old clothing, Hispanic heritage, jersey day, hbcu day, etc stuff gets 3-6 yrs of use (bc I have 2 kids and when I can I try to buy unisex items).
