In his account, he explained that he has been the rightful owner of the land for over 20 years and that he originally acquired it for farming. However, he said some illegal miners became a serious threat to him, allegedly attacking him more than three times and even injuring him. He further stated that they had done even more to his younger brother, simply because he tried to stop them from mining on his land, this a land about a hectare already damage with pit. According to him, out of fear for his safety, he eventually allowed them to operate. He later leased the land to legal miners so that he could at least receive some income from it rather than risk losing the land completely. House owners in the area have also raised serious concerns, particularly about the condition of their homes, some of which they say are now at the brink of collapsing as a result of mining activities around them. At this critical moment, the priority of the state government is clear, to pursue justice and accountability for the lives lost, establish the facts surrounding the incident, and put in place lasting reforms to regulate and sanitise mining activities across Niger State.
