@art_dailydose: Canadian artist Rob Gonsalves created paintings that seem to change while you look at them. A bridge becomes a fleet of sailing ships. A city skyline blends into a forest. Familiar shapes connect two different scenes so smoothly that your eye accepts the transition before your mind catches up. Nothing in the painting moves, yet what you see keeps changing. Born in Toronto in 1959, Gonsalves trained and worked as an architect before pursuing painting full-time. That background helped him manipulate perspective, scale, and space, making impossible connections feel convincing. His influences included René Magritte, M. C. Escher, and the imaginative progressive-rock album covers he admired as a teenager. Architecture, nature, and childhood wonder became recurring elements in his work. These were carefully planned, hand-painted images. His mature paintings were made with acrylic on stretched canvas, and his official website notes that each generally took three to four months to complete. Developing the idea and working out the composition were often the most demanding stages. In Sun Sets Sail (2001), the openings beneath a bridge gradually become the sails of ships, allowing the same shapes to belong to two realities at once. His work is known as magic realism, where recognizable places and everyday activities open into something extraordinary. That sense of possibility also reached readers through his Imagine picture books, including the Governor General’s Literary Award-winning Imagine a Day. Gonsalves died in 2017, but his paintings still invite the same small adventure: look carefully, follow the shapes, and watch the world become something else. #art #painting #artist #creativity #arthistory
