It’s all of above three. Yes, NYC schools have issues and are segregated but not knowing your kid can’t do long division in their 9th grade year-a choice. It feels like she used her child a long term social/newspaper piece, idk. 😣

She highly underplayed how much non-monetary resources are a factor in education. Highly resource schools include resources like having parents or grandparents who regularly volunteer. They do one on one reading groups do extra math sheets. They come in and are surprise readers. They do art projects help monitor the lunchroom and recess volunteer before school starts. And all of that free labor. Often times coming from highly educated volunteers. Has a major impact on children from preschool to fifth grade. Having that many volunteers doesn’t just impact educational outcomes, but plays a role in behavioral outcomes as well. The monetary funding of a school is not what makes it resourced.

I like how you said in another video this is the reverse of what Ruby Bridges had to do (paraphrasing), but I can agree. I took the time to read the whole article & I wanted and tried to understand what she was trying to do and the spirit behind it, but I do believe it was the wrong way to go about it. Policy is rarely changed by the efforts of one singular person trying to change the system, but by the network of true believers that work together like a well oiled machine to create that change. It comes through protesting, gathering evidence or data, and trying to get it on an agenda; that be the school board, or principal, etc. And the fact that she didn’t follow-up with her daughter as to where her educational levels were, is disheartening. What her daughter said about her (mother) should have thought of her more and not the whole system broke my heart. The story very much felt like a paradox of ideals jumping between ‘I want to trust the school/system’ to questioning whether she should.
