Ignoring your kid is a real strategy. Most parents are just aiming it... backwards. The skill has a bad name. It’s called active ignore, and I’d rather describe it as being intentional with your attention: you decide which behaviors get your eyes and your voice, and which ones get nothing at all. Here’s the uncomfortable part. Most homes already ignore the child constantly, just in the wrong direction. Nobody says a word while they’re playing quietly or getting started on their own. The second the whining starts, everybody is suddenly available. So the most reliable way to reach you becomes misbehaving. And that’s the thing that grows. On purpose looks different. The harmless stuff gets nothing: the noises, the humming, the muttering under the breath. Anything destructive or aggressive still gets stopped straight away, calmly and briefly. Then the step almost everyone skips. The moment they do the thing you wanted, you turn up warm and you say it out loud. Your attention is already shaping this.
