Reminds me of my grandad in the early stages of dementia - he's very politically opinionated, he can still get on his soapbox and make a speech or whatever, but when he gets any push back, his brain just can't keep up, so recently he's just been talking about it less. Maybe Trump is the same - his declining mental faculties make him vulnerable to embarrassing himself if he disagrees with someone in conversation, so he only ever makes his real opinions known when he can't be interrupted.
