But in many cases the events that make parents nervous are inevitably NOT emergency events and are actually GAGGING episodes! 📝 GAGGING is a normal reflex babies use to move food back forward in the mouth to protect their airway where as CHOKING is an emergent situation characterized by a dangerous blockage of the airway So HOW can you tell the difference? 👇🏻 💡 What I like to drive home the most is that if baby is actively making noise then they are NOT choking. In actual choking situations the airway is blocked which makes it so baby cannot cry with vocalization or cough. It inevitably also causes babies face to turn pale or blue due to lack of oxygen. 👉🏻 So if baby is actively crying, coughing, vocalizing, and red faced they are GAGGING and attempting to protect themselves FROM choking! 🌟 Giving baby the opportunities to work on their gagging is very important because it is how they learn their body and how to prevent themselves from choking 🎥 This is an actual video of how I handle gagging with my own child. I kept the original audio so you can see what I say and do. The important thing is to continue to monitor and if any of the above choking indicators emerges to switch your approach.
