King Solomon did turn away from wholehearted devotion to God in his old age to worship foreign deities, including Ashtoreth (a Phoenician goddess equivalent to Ishtar/Astarte). Always thought it was funny how the wisest man in the Bible quit worshiping God and had thousands of wives.

Ecclesiastes is written from an “Under the Sun” perspective: a life without an afterlife. Solomon says “If this life is all there is, then nothing matters”. But since there IS an afterlife in which we will be judged and a God who will judge, then everything matters to some degree. Solomon manages to peace in that and understands that his efforts are not entirely for nothing
