There was actually another deeper reason on why Goku gave Cell that senzu bean. Cell is very egotistical due to him having the dna of both Frieza and Vegeta. As you know Goku is a genius when it comes to combat, so him understanding Cell's personality through fighting is nothing crazy for Goku. Goku basically gave Cell that senzu bean because if Cell was pushed to a corner, he would destroy the entire planet. Goku had to feed Cell's ego by giving him a senzu bean. That's pretty much it
