@adnanmd: One of the weirdest things about becoming a doctor is that you almost feel like you’ve lost the right to complain. Medicine asks us to sacrifice for so long that we become really good at convincing ourselves that whatever comes next, we’ll make it worth it. And sometimes, it’s not. #medicine #healthcare #doctor
Yeah i’m 32 with autoimmune disease that was provoked by stress in my residency , guess what? I lost my position as a resident and now I’m literally jobless GP .

People have a misconception about the amount of money that you make as a physician, but what they don’t understand is that you don’t see a paycheck until after 11 years minimum of school/training AND student loan debt. So between the loss on 11 years of investment AND student loans with interest accruing - I didn’t feel financially secure until I hit my 40’s. Add exhaustion, stress, risk of being sued, along with delaying starting a family. In my mind, there are OTHER ways to make money that would have been way easier than this.

you can care deeply about your patients, be good at what you do, and still look at everything medicine has required of you and wonder whether you would make the same choice again. those things aren’t mutually exclusive. I’m glad someone is actually talking about it openly bc I guarantee youre making other people feel a lot less alone in having those thoughts.

As a burnt out PGY4 gen surg resident I get this. Some days are great and I’m reminded why I’m doing this and then some days I’m miserable and wish I worked a office job with every weekend off and never having to study/take work home. Maybe I’d be married, have a house, couple kids by my age. Never thought I’d say that as a premed. But man I wish I was a “normal” person sometimes.

Yea but isn’t it also very specialty dependent? I’m sure you don’t see derm, optho, or even the hospital system family med saying this

I am currently being told this , I am a current LCSW and I’m being asked why would I give up a stable career to pursue being a physician and I asked myself what would I pick myself if my decision wasn’t based off of survival 🤔
