The term
The term "Uncle Tom" comes from the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. While the original novel's Uncle Tom was a heroic, Christ-like martyr who refused to betray other slaves, subsequent stage and film adaptations distorted the character into a subservient, self-hating figure. The term "Uncle Tom" is now used as a derogatory slur against Black people perceived as betraying their race for white approval or acceptance. The character of Uncle Tom was introduced in Stowe's highly influential anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was inspired by the true story of Josiah Henson, an escaped slave. In the original book, Tom is a deeply religious and principled man who is beaten to death rather than reveal the location of two runaway slaves. He is portrayed as a dignified figure who chooses martyrdom to protect his people. Immediately after the novel's publication, popular stage versions of the story emerged, but these versions "grossly distorted" the character for their audiences. The character in these later versions was depicted as a weak, subservient, and self-hating individual who would betray his own people to please white people. This distorted version of Uncle Tom became the basis for the slur. "Uncle Tom" is now used as a derogatory term for Black individuals seen as overly submissive, eager for white approval, and who are perceived to have betrayed their own racial identity and community.
