@brian.wendle: We’re given a choice between two things by people who hoard wealth and money because they know it’s not really a choice between two things, but deciding what the world should be like. They like the world they’ve created and don’t want us to see a better future is possible. They’d rather us fight over nonsense. Stop it.
The other countries you're describing are social democracies where capitalism is kept in check and workers are protected through governmental regulation

The coffee shop model you described is a cooperative. Not capitalist. Capitalism would involve not paying well, taking the profit, and being aquired by a larger entity at some point.

all those things you mentioned exist in spite of capitalism, not "in tandem" with it

Socialism doesn’t mean “no local businesses” 😭 Public libraries + fire departments existing alongside private coffee shops is just a mixed economy. The interesting question is who owns/controls businesses, not whether coffee shops exist.

Yep they’re definitely not in opposition, only if you make it that way

Socialism exists alongside capitalism. If it didn’t, it would be communism.

The problem is who is in control. Current government has grubby hands on both ideologies: Socialism that depends on a corrupt government redistributing wealth, and capitalism that artificially subsidizes and regulates private business that would otherwise fail. “They” want us to fighting with each other over this, meanwhile they have hands on both sides. Two wings of the same bird.

Omg yes the lack of tolerance of nuance is insane… everyone thinks they know everything, and think they’re being scientific somehow, but they clearly don’t understand that science embraces uncertainty and complexity and reality as it is, not simplified to abstraction

Tell me you don’t understand socialism without telling me you don’t understand socialism. Socialism ensures your small, local coffee shop isn’t run out of business by giant multibillion dollar corporations. Capitalism WANTS them to run out of business.

[Tears of joy][Tears of joy][Tears of joy] laughing so I don’t cry. You’re so wrong about all of this. Capitalism is mass exploitation and murder for profit. Keeping this system in tact is no different than saying you support the genocides, wars, and dictators brought to “third world” countries because *local coffee shop exists*. Germany provided some public services to their citizens while they enslaved and gassed others. You are woefully underinformed. And it’s not a sign that you’re capable of understanding nuance. It’s a sign that you’re not educated on capitalism or socialism. Put down the phone and pick up The Shock Doctrine, The Jakarta Method, Disaster Capitalism, or even The People’s History of the United States.
