i came to the comments as an SLP to share that AAC supports spoken language development, and i am so glad to see so many other comments already having said the same thing! having a strong support system will make all the difference for him, so you’re 100% doing the right thing! day by day. you (and he, of course!) have got this!

My son got his aac at 3. At 5 he started saying a word on his device and pointing to my mouth to repeat the word - in turn mimicking the way I moved my mouth. From 6 to now 7 those mouth movement turned into repeating verbal words. He started repeating saying from his favorite songs and shows. That’s where I learned he is a gesault language processor. With learning about that, he is now starting to verbally command his wants and needs, he’s singing, and saying short sentences. He said I love you 6 months ago. AAC opened the world of language for my son and our entire family. I remember feeling the same feelings you do. Don’t get me wrong, we still work very hard. That device still is around and accessible and honestly so helpful when he isn’t feeling good for example. Even being able to tell me on his device what body part hurts is huge.

My child’s AAC device has helped him find his words. He hardly uses it at all now, just when he’s not able to enunciate well enough to be understood. It’s not a replacement it’s a tool for growth

SLP here! I've had many students "graduate" from using a device over the years. The goal is for the device to help him communicate what he needs so he doesn't feel upset and frustrated. It doesn't have to be permanent and research shows AAC use benefits spoken language acquisition. I know it feels like a huge step but it doesn't have to be

I am an SLP who had this exact conversation with a family today. This changes nothing about how he’ll communicate in the future (although like many people have shared, research tells us it does help verbal language development!!) but it does offer him an method to communicate wants, needs, thoughts, feelings, dreams, hopes, etc in the present!! Sounds like he is lucky with a great family in his corner to support him as he grows and learns💘

My son got his device a year ago when he turned three. He just turned four and he’s still not talking, but he mimics so many words and now he can type sentences. It has completely changed his mood and our ability to communicate, so keep an open mind!!

My son started using an AAC device..he caught on so quickly. It has changed so much for us. He also started using his own words after starting AAC. Now he uses both. I felt the same

studies show AAC actually aids in spoken language development. it doesn’t have to be one or the other, he can actually have both!!!

Using your voice is easier than using a device, but using a device is really, really good at teaching you how to use your voice or give you one if you can’t

as an SLPA, i’ve seen kids come in with no words or sounds, get an AAC and their language EXPLODES, it’s never ever giving up on his voice, the constant repetition of words is aiding him in so many ways!!

Thank you thank you thank you for shifting your mindset!!! As a special educator I have sooooo many stories of students that were non speaking that I get to have full conversations with now! I also have to sons on the spectrum and both use AAC devices and it is a wonderful tool- if I don’t understand the verbal word they open their device and find or type it. My older son is still non speaking but is proficient in using his device to communicate clearly and I’m still blown away by the information he has learned that he randomly shares with us. Something I never even thought he knew!!

I work in SPED and have seen a student with an AAC device become less dependent on it. Now he talks more and uses it to teach himself how to say new words.

AAC supports language, it doesn’t replace it! In fact, it may leverage his language development more than he could learn in a traditional way. Starting young only makes it more effective!

Coming to support you as a peds OT and agree with all the SLPs! I work with many kiddos who use an AAC device and are gaining spoken language because of it! Keep going, mama! Praying this is the catalyst he needs! 🥰
