Tom Cruise is 64 and still hanging off the outside of aircrafts. Syracuse kid, working class Catholic family, dad moved them constantly and was by all accounts hard work. He's dyslexic and struggled badly at school. He nearly became a priest, then left a seminary at fourteen and found acting instead. Risky Business made him famous at 21. Top Gun in 1986 made him the biggest star on earth at 23. Then he spent twenty years refusing to just be that. Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut for Kubrick, Collateral, where he played a hitman and is genuinely frightening in it. Three Oscar nominations for acting. Then Mission Impossible, which he's produced since 1996 and turned into the last franchise built on real stunts. He scaled the Burj Khalifa. He hung off a plane taking off at 53. He did a HALO jump and rode a motorbike off a cliff. Then Top Gun Maverick, thirty six years after the first one, and it made over $1.4 billion. The style has never needed to change. Dark suit, white shirt, aviators. The leather jacket. That's it, and it's been working since 1986. He got an Academy Honorary Award this year for what he's done for filmmaking, stunts and cinemas, which is a strange way to finally recognise someone with three acting nominations.
