Communication strategies for dementia should change based on what the person is still able to understand, express, and do independently. As a speech-language pathologist, here are some of the differences I’m demonstrating in these three examples: Mild dementia: My rate of speech is relatively normal. I introduce myself, provide context and details, ask open-ended questions, and give the person opportunities to make choices and maintain independence. Moderate dementia: I simplify my language and get to the point more quickly. I primarily use yes/no questions, gestures, and visual cues. When I need the person to do something, I show them rather than only telling them. Severe dementia: I slow my speech considerably and don’t rely on the person being able to answer questions. I use facial expressions, gestures, visual information, and physical assistance when needed to help communicate what is happening. This is only a simulation, and dementia stages are not black and white. Every person presents differently. The point is that we can’t use one blanket set of dementia communication strategies. We have to adjust how we communicate based on the individual’s current abilities and needs. #dementia #dementiacommunication #speechtherapy #dementiastages #caregiver
