@mattperedino: I think a lot of parents would love sleeping close to their baby if they weren’t made to feel like it was automatically wrong. If you do bed share, learn how to make it safer. Look up the Safe Sleep Seven: breastfeeding, sober parents, no smoking, healthy full-term baby, baby on their back, firm flat mattress, and no pillows or heavy blankets around baby. Never a couch or recliner. Nothing is zero risk, so learn the risks and make an informed decision. For us, being close, nursing through the night and responding when our baby needs us has been one of the best parts of having a baby. I sleep with my baby, I genuinely don’t care what others have to say about it.

As a mother, crying it out, naturally went against all of my maternal instincts and just felt wrong. I tried it once and the only thing a baby learns from this, is that their parent isn’t coming back.

I think there’s a balance. Some mild sleep training with comforting at regular intervals worked wonders for my son’s sleep and myself.

Crazy how moms were taught to suppress their instincts. A crying baby must be nurtured and comforted

"Cry-It-Out" is not the same as the Ferber method. The Ferber method is considered a "graduated extinction" practice and "Cry-It-Out" is considered an "unmodified extinction" practice.
One of the points of the periodic check-ins with the ferber method is to prevent crying from escalating into true distress.
The Ferber method also says not to continue for more than 45 to 60 minutes if the child does not fall asleep.
Research has shown no harm from the Ferber method.

If you really go down the rabbit hole…. The two men that invented this method wanted to push the agenda of woman going into the work force! Like I’m sorry but you are insane if you hear your baby cry and you don’t try to soothe them ??!! I understand sometimes they just do or if you have to go bathroom or for mental health where you just need 5 minutes etc., I get that but like when I first heard that being a new mom I was like huh I hear him cry my natural instinct is to soothe him! And also babies CANNOT soothe themselves so you know what happens when you let them cry it out ????!!!! They PASS out when their brain cannot handle it anymore so they pass out! Please do not ignore your babies cries 😭

When I was a first time mother, everything in my body told me to comfort my baby when he cried. Letting your child cry it out does not feel natural at all

As a mom I hate hearing my son crying it immediately puts me in distress so I js don’t understand what the point of sleep training is, babies cry it’s normal, part of being parents is sacrificing things for our babies and sleep is one of those things we sacrifice for the sake of my kids wellbeing.

I could never get down with this method. Like imagine being snuggled up in a tummy and hearing your momma’s heart for months. Then, you’re alone, cold and you can’t hear her heart or smell her. 🥺 Nah. I coslept while topless and my little thrived.

I did cry it out. 15 minutes was all it took. 15 minutes, instead of countless wake ups, constantly being sleep deprived. Instead of it taking over an hour EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

I did a modified Ferber at 3 1/2 months. 95% of the time baby stops crying at 2-5 minutes and rarely over 10 minutes. Puts himself to sleep for naps and links his sleeps cycles. At 6 months sleeps 10 hours straights sometimes 12, only wakes up if he has a leak. Cry it out isn’t leaving the room, it’s allowing them to build self soothing skills

Here to say to any other moms who’ve gone through what I went through. It’s okay to let your baby cry him/herself to sleep WITHIN REASON. That was the ONLY way my baby was able to develop self soothing skills. Otherwise he was completely dependent on me and neither of us were getting any sleep. Again, within reason, but your baby will be fine.
