Timur’s Crushing Victory over Bayezid I The Battle of Ankara on 28 July 1402 was one of the most devastating defeats in Ottoman history. Amir Timur (Tamerlane) faced Sultan Bayezid I, also known as Bayezid the Thunderbolt, who was considered one of the most powerful rulers and military commanders of his time. Timur’s army was significantly larger and consisted mainly of highly mobile cavalry. Historical sources give different numbers, but one major source estimates around 160,000 troops for Timur, compared with approximately 70,000–90,000 Ottoman troops. Timur also had more than 30 war elephants. The battle turned into a decisive Timurid victory. Timur exploited divisions within the Ottoman army and persuaded the Kara Tatars and several Anatolian forces who had previously been incorporated into Bayezid’s empire to change sides during the battle. The Ottoman army collapsed, and Bayezid continued fighting with only about 3,000 men before he was finally captured. The consequences were enormous. Bayezid himself became Timur’s prisoner, and the Ottoman Empire was thrown into a period of civil war known as the Ottoman Interregnum. Timur also restored several Anatolian Turkish principalities that Bayezid had previously conquered. So, in simple terms: Timur did not merely defeat Bayezid — he destroyed his army, captured the Ottoman Sultan personally, dismantled much of his Anatolian power, and pushed the Ottoman Empire into a succession crisis. Bayezid was a powerful conqueror. But at Ankara, Timur completely outplayed him.
