The magnificent Masjid an-Nabawi we know today carries within it centuries of history, expansion, and continuous care for the worshippers who travel to Madinah from around the world. One of the most significant chapters began during the reign of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz aul day. On 2 November 1984, he laid the foundation stone for a major expansion of the Prophet's Mosque, with construction beginning the following year in 1985. The expansion extended the mosque on its northern, eastern, and western sides, adding approximately 82,000 square metres to the mosque building. It also introduced six additional minarets and major facilities designed to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers and visitors. Among its remarkable architectural features were 27 retractable domes, designed to allow natural light and ventilation into the mosque. The development of Masjid an-Nabawi did not stop there. Later projects continued expanding its courtyards, services, and shading systems, helping make the mosque more accessible and comfortable for the enormous numbers of Muslims who visit today. So the next time you walk through Masjid an-Nabawi, remember: what surrounds you today is part of a long history of caring for this blessed mosque and those who come to worship within it.
