Delve into the early days of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who grew up just three blocks apart in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, New York, during the 1940s and 1950s. They attended the same schools: Public School 164, Parsons Junior High, and Forest Hills High School. Both were captivated by music, especially the emerging rock and roll sound and the Everly Brothers. Simon first noticed Garfunkel singing in a fourth-grade talent show and saw performing as a way to attract girls. Their friendship solidified in 1953 when they appeared together in a sixth-grade production of Alice in Wonderland. They formed a street-corner doo-wop group called the Peptones, where they honed their harmonies before performing as a duo at school dances. While at Forest Hills High, in 1956, they penned their first song, “The Girl for Me.” Simon's father even registered its copyright with the Library of Congress. Inspired by trying to recall the lyrics to the Everly Brothers' “Hey Doll Baby,” they wrote “Hey, Schoolgirl.” They recorded it for $25 at Sanders Recording Studio in Manhattan. It was during this session that promoter Sid Prosen overheard them and later signed the then 15-year-olds to his independent label, Big Records. #PaulSimon #ArtGarfunkel #SimonAndGarfunkel #ClassicRock #MusicHistory
