Nene Royal is a young girl with a dream—and her dream is a big one. I was born in ’79, so I grew up hearing some of the rock music of that era. Still, I’m more familiar with the rock music of the 1990s. But Nene has brought back memories of the 1970s and ’80s rock era for rock fans around the world—this time in a way that is completely authentic and uniquely her own. Throughout this season’s competition, she has brought back happiness and hope to music fans who once thought that the rock music we loved had been forgotten by Generations Y and Z. Somehow, she has made it come alive again. Her singing. Her guitar playing. Her stage presence. Her musical arrangements. And the sheer energy she expresses through her facial expressions and body language. She is a little rock goddess—a rare young artist who seems to have everything: musicianship, performance, charisma, passion, and an unmistakable identity. Nene is also a living symbol of something I deeply believe in: where there is dedication and effort, there is a path to success. Last week, I bought guitars and ukuleles for my two daughters, who are 9 and 7 years old. I secretly hope that one day they might become as talented as Nene. I told them, “Dad would be so happy if you could become good at playing music. You probably won’t be as good as Nene—because that would be incredibly difficult—but just seeing you play would already make me very happy.” And honestly, Nene has made me want to devote more time, love, and attention to my own children. Because when I look at Nene, I also see the example set by her father—the way he has devoted himself, sacrificed his own life and dreams, and given everything he could to help Nene reach her dream. No matter what happens in the final round of this competition, I want you to know this: You have already become a wonderful role model and an inspiration to so many young girls. At least to my daughters. They have been humming Zombie all day long, picking up their guitars, strumming chords, and singing along. So, Nene, I want you to know that I’m cheering for you. I truly hope you achieve your dreams and find the success you deserve.
