@babyrefluxguide: Reflux doesn’t always look like projectile vomiting or weight loss. That doesn’t mean it should be dismissed, especially when it gets in the way of comfortable feeding, breathing, and sleeping. These are my boys, and the “why” behind this page. “Reflux”, by definition, is the backward flow of stomach content into the oesophagus. There is no diagnostic rule that says it needs to exit the mouth in order to be taken seriously. In fact, re-swallowed stomach acid can do even more damage to your baby’s delicate GI tract. So, what DOES reflux look like in babies? 🚨Frequent coughing, gagging, choking, swallowing, and/or hiccups 🚨Difficulty falling or staying asleep 🚨Uncomfortable on their back or with pressure on their tummy 🚨Irritability or excessive crying during or between feeds. You may notice your little one arching their back, pulling away, twisting, turning, and/or grunting 🚨Excessive saliva, drool, or spit-up 🚨Nasal congestion, noisy breathing, and/or a hoarse voice/cry The only way to actually fix reflux in babies is to find and address the root cause. These can include: ⚡️A weak or shallow latch ⚡️’Aerophagia’ (aka air swallowing) ️⚡️Oral tension, restriction, poor coordination, or low tone ⚡️Food sensitivity, intolerance, or allergy Reflux in babies is almost always a symptom of something deeper going on in a little body.
