Teacher here: math today focuses more on number sense than on rote memorization. It’s actually a good thing, because understanding how math actually works is better in the long run than just learning the process. The early grades, K-3, kids are learning how to work with and manipulate numbers in order to strengthen their understanding and mental math skills. This news report is misleading because it misinterprets the problem being asked. The problem is not asking how many fish were caught, because if that was the case the answer would be 7. The problem is focused on the process someone could use to mentally come to the answer- without counters, without using their fingers etc. the problem asks which doubles fact (such as 4+4 sports 5+5) would help you come to the answer. That’s why the answer is 5+5 and not 7. It’s not asking how many fish were caught. Why are they doing this? It's about building a foundation for when the numbers get larger and the math gets more complicated. If students can build foundational numbers sense with simple one digit addition by recognizing and using other facts it sets them up for success in the future. I hope this helped a little bit. The news report is not seeing the whole picture
