Turns out there’s a term for what I went through: Child on Child Sexual Abuse (COCSA). I’d never heard of this before and didn’t come to accept it until I was nearly 20 years old. As I started piecing things together, it all began to make sense. Though COCSA is not regarded with the same severity as abuse perpetrated by adults, its impact is just as profound. Unfortunately, it often goes unaddressed, dismissed as “kids being kids,” which in some cases may be true. I recognize that children are curious, and things happen. If something did happen between you and another kid and you never considered it harmful, don’t suddenly reinterpret it as such. Yet it’s equally important not to assume my experience was the same. COCSA can be confusing because no one wants to blame a child. It’s a common belief that to be labeled an abuser, there needs to be a clear display of dominance and that one must act with intentionality and awareness of wrongdoing. However, the inability to label someone as an intentional abuser doesn’t undo the damage to the person on the receiving end. As I mentioned, I do not blame the girl who did this to me, partly out of selfishness, because I hope the other girls don’t blame me. I was not mentally mature enough, or aware to the impact of my actions. I never had ill intentions of causing harm or confusion but having pure motives doesn’t make wrongdoing unharmful.
