Chile is a long, narrow country on the western side of South America, stretching along the Pacific Ocean. It shares borders with Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Its capital and largest city is Santiago, which is located in central Chile near the Andes Mountains. Chile is famous for its incredible variety of landscapes. In the north is the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate and contains many of the country’s major cities, farms, and vineyards. Further south, the landscape becomes wetter and colder, with forests, lakes, mountains, glaciers, and fjords. Southern Chile includes part of Patagonia, which is known for its dramatic scenery and large areas of wilderness. Chile eventually became independent during the following decade, with Bernardo O’Higgins becoming one of the country’s most important independence leaders.
Chile later became involved in the War of the Pacific from 1879 to 1884 against Peru and Bolivia. Chile won the conflict and gained territory in the north, while Bolivia lost its coastline. During the 20th century, Chile experienced major political changes. Salvador Allende became president in 1970, but his government was overthrown by the military in 1973. General Augusto Pinochet then ruled Chile until 1990. His government was responsible for serious human-rights abuses, while also introducing major economic reforms. Chile returned to democratic civilian government in 1990 and has remained a democracy since then, although it has continued to
