AI does ~80% of my work now — here's how to find your 80% My life genuinely changed when I got AI into my actual work instead of just talking to it. And it kept being true for other people, which is the part that convinced me it wasn't luck. Every single week people in my community message me about something they just got working — almost always something they didn't think they could do. Business owners telling me they've saved hundreds of hours. People with normal jobs and a boss, handing off the part of the week they dreaded. Same pattern every time, and it starts smaller than you'd think. The advice out there contradicts itself. One person says learn prompting. The next says prompting is dead. Someone says build agents, someone else says agents are hype. Here's what none of them lead with: BEFORE you learn any tool, you sort your week. Take how you actually spend a week and write down what you do. Not job titles — the real stuff. Chasing the same update. Rewriting the same kind of message. Moving numbers between two places. Building the same document with different details in it. Every line on that list is one of four kinds, and the kind decides the tool: KIND 1 — SAME EVERY SINGLE TIME. Same trigger, same steps, same result. A form gets filled → it lands in a sheet → a confirmation goes out. That's a plain AUTOMATION, and it needs NO AI at all. Faster, cheaper, never has an opinion. Most people reach for something clever here and waste a month. If it's identical every time, you want the boring, literal thing. KIND 2 — SAME SHAPE, DIFFERENT CONTENT. The biggest pile, and where most of your 80% lives. Every message needs a reply, but every message is different. Every week needs a summary, but the week is never the same. Reading, deciding, drafting, summarising, pulling details out of something messy. This is AI INSIDE AN AUTOMATION: the flow catches the work, the AI does the thinking step, it comes back finished or nearly. KIND 3 — DIFFERENT EVERY TIME, NEEDS FIGURING OUT. There's a goal, and the path depends on what you find along the way. Research this properly. Build the whole proposal. Work out why the numbers moved. That's an AGENT — it plans, tries, checks its own result, adjusts. Reach for this LAST, and only when the first two genuinely don't fit. KIND 4 — YOURS, AND IT STAYS YOURS. The judgment calls. The relationship that needs you specifically. The decision where being wrong costs real money. That's the 20% — and the goal was never to hand over everything. The goal is that the 20% gets your whole attention instead of the scraps left at the end of the day. THE PRACTICAL PART: don't automate the whole list. Pick ONE line from kind 2 — something you do every week and find slightly annoying. Build that one thing. Use it for a week. Fix what it gets wrong and put each fix somewhere permanent so it stays fixed. Then pick the next one. No dramatic build, ever. Just one line off the list at a time — and then one day you look up and most of the week is running without you. Your 80% is already sitting in your week. You just have to sort it.
