I enjoyed Greg Tang back in the day. I’ve been retired 14 years, but he was a thing back in the day. I attended several workshops, quite entertaining.Number sense taught before algorithms makes sense. But ALL grades have to do this across the school. If it’s not, you’re wasting a year doing these concepts and then going to traditionally curriculum the year after. It is hard to get across grade by-in for this type of curriculum.

Parents hate this…but it’s so beneficial. Here in Florida parents won and now we don’t teach “complicated” math

We totally understood what was happening… I graduated in 1997 and I understood how we learned. We definitely learned to break it down, but not the way common core does. It’s too many steps

Wait..... this is common core? I'm down with it then if it's taught and explained this way and not with pictures and boxes without this type of explanation. I've seen the division videos and those helped me understand someone new very well.

thank you for actually explaining the reason. my teacher always said "just do it, show your work, or I'll fail you." I never knew what "show your work/process" meant and now I do. makes so much sense now

I know that most people hate this method because it’s more work or it seems that way when you understand it the other way easily but I wish that I would’ve had this method when I was growing up. I failed math from fifth grade on. When this method came out with common core, as a teacher, I taught it to my first graders. It was like a cloud was lifted in my brain with understanding numbers in math! Now I am able to manipulate the numbers in that way in my head and it makes sense to me for the first time in my life. I think that the original method of teaching math makes sense for the majority of the class but for students like me, I needed this other method so badly. Numbers never made sense to me and now they do. [Heartwarming]

This is why I don't trust home schooling. No way most parents have the depth of knowledge to hand hold their kids through steps that seem too obvious to the parent. That's why we have professional teachers that know multiple ways to explain things and different methods based on what the kid is stuck at.

We weren't allowed to look at the tens until we had solved for the ones. This approach would have been marked wrong even if the answer was right.

I kmew I was good at math...my brain said I was weird back in the day...i never spoke up, so I never learned...lost the love of my life...Still love you math, just didn't learn to understand you then...will you take me back?💜😳

My first grader does this in her Montessori class. They use beads to actually show the 1s ,10s ,100s, etc.

eh kemarin ada tuh ortu yg komplain cara ini. katanya terlalu ribet, lama dan menyalahkan kurikulum. ternyata ya di luar di ajarin dari begini dulu, fungsinya biar anak belajar dari dasar😭😭
