Eleven years ago, my teacher, Wolfgang Bodison, asked my acting class if anyone had written a one act he could direct. I had a 25 page rom com called “The Best Man” that I’d written to be a short film that would work. Me and two classmates started working on it. Ten years ago, we staged the play, having expanded it to full length and renamed it “For Better, For Worse,” in Studio 2 at Playhouse West. I am ever grateful for the warm response we got. It convinced me and, more importantly, my parents that I wasn’t totally insane for taking a crack at this writing and acting thing. (They have told me since that before seeing the play they “didn’t think I was funny,” which, once they saw some of the humor on display, probably made sense why). I stuck with the play for years. Staging it in NYC, adapting it to a screenplay, but after Covid disruptions and producers taking swings at the film that didn’t quite connect, I decided that, to know the film existed, I had to do it myself. So I called my cast mates to see if they’d step back in the role. On August 23 at 8pm, the film ‘Do Us Part’ will play at the El Portal theater in North Hollywood as part of the @playhousewestla film festival. I’m beyond excited to bring it back to where it all started, and am ever grateful to Wolf for putting the thing on its feet. Telling this story with Travis and Kelly, on stage and on screen, has been one of the joys of my life. If you’re in LA, come on out!
