Some people misunderstand this poetry by Ghani Khan and think that he is accusing or rejecting Islamic books. But that is not what the poetry necessarily means. Ghani Khan is speaking to the Mullah and making a deeper spiritual point: Allah cannot be truly found simply by reading books, no matter how many books a person reads. Books can show you the picture of the path; they can tell you where the path is and guide you toward Allah. But knowing the description of a path is not the same as actually walking on it. Religious knowledge can teach a person what is right and wrong, but the responsibility of understanding it, feeling it within the heart, making the right decisions, and transforming one's character belongs to the person. So Ghani Khan is not necessarily criticizing the books themselves. Rather, he is criticizing the idea that having religious knowledge alone means that a person has reached Allah. The knowledge must become something lived and experienced through the heart, character, actions, and purification of the self. Then, through the final line, “Zamung lar juda da, dalta gata da tawan ke,” Ghani Khan presents the spiritual path as something different from merely collecting knowledge. To seek Allah, a person has to overcome the worldly desires and attachments that dominate the self. The point is not that every worldly thing must be abandoned, but that the ego and worldly desires must not become greater than the search for Allah.
