Keeping Medaka RIce Fish With Shrimp (Neocaridina Cherry Shrimp) Keeping Medaka rice fish and Neocaridina shrimp together has become a popular combo in the aquarium hobby, so I wanted to share what I’ve learned after keeping them side-by-side for about a year and a half across multiple tanks. In all that time, I’ve never once seen any of my Medaka go after an adult, juvenile, or even baby shrimp. This is just my personal experience, of course, and every tank is different, but my Medaka honestly seem far too slow and gentle to catch a healthy shrimp anyway. In this video, you’ll see a perfect example: a few of my Medaka rush over to steal some shrimp food, completely ignoring the shrimp around them and going straight for the algae wafer. I’ve seen this behaviour countless times—my shrimp are experts at minding their own business, and the fish are far more interested in scavenging than hunting. It’s actually fascinating to watch how peacefully these two species coexist when given the right environment. One thing worth mentioning is that I have witnessed my Neocaridina shrimp eating Medaka eggs. I’m not sure whether those eggs were unfertilized or already starting to decay, so it’s hard to say whether this is normal opportunistic cleanup behaviour or something else. Shrimp are natural scavengers, after all. Besides that, both species stay calm, peaceful, and focused on their own routines throughout the day. Both Medaka and Neocaridina prefer very similar water parameters, which makes them incredibly compatible in a wide range of planted or low-tech aquariums. Stable temperatures, clean water, and plenty of hiding spaces go a long way in helping them thrive together. If you’re looking for a colourful, active, low-maintenance community that still feels natural, this combo is honestly one of my favourites. Their interactions are peaceful, their behaviours complement each other, and their care needs overlap nicely—making them excellent tank mates for beginner and experienced fishkeepers alike.
