“NO, I WANT MOMMY!” If your child is going through a phase where they only want you, or they keep rejecting Daddy or another caregiver, you probably hear this more often than you’d like. And sometimes it can be sweet. Sometimes exhausting. Sometimes even a little uncomfortable, especially when the other person is right there trying to help. But there’s nothing wrong with your child wanting Mommy today. Or Daddy. Or feeling more comfortable with one person in a particular moment. Children are allowed to have preferences. What we can teach them is how to express those preferences without being unkind to someone else in the process. Instead of turning it into: “Ohhh, you only want Mommy!” “You love Mommy the most!” “See? She doesn’t want Daddy!” We can simply help them find the words: “You want Mommy today. That’s okay. You can say, ‘No, thank you, Daddy. I want Mommy today.’” We don’t have to make them feel bad for choosing one person. We don’t have to force them to accept someone’s help just to avoid hurting their feelings. And we don’t have to turn their preference into a competition between the people who love them. They can say no. They can have a preference. And they can learn to communicate both with kindness. Today it might be Mommy. Tomorrow it might be Daddy. What matters is that they know their preference is okay, while also learning how to express it respectfully. The preference is allowed. The disrespect isn’t. 🤍 #CoachMontessori #MontessoriParenting #RespectfulParenting #ParentingTips #ChildDevelopment
