I got an interview for managment of our very large team 5 times. Got turned down 5 times. That's right, they kept figuring I was good enough for the interview, then hiring one of their friends instead. All of which quit or got fired for doing some really questionable stuff. After the 5th time I switched departments and they repeated this process 3 more times.

As a GenX, I say it's * not* fair, but sometimes you have to play the game even when it sucks. Just like fantasy hair colours, or tattoos or piercings shouldn't matter, or the difference between jeans and dress pants, or when women were forced to wear stockings and heels - norms will change but from the inside so you gotta get in the door first.

another point that I feel is important is that everyone in HR will SCOUR a person's social media and if you're someone who's overtly toxic, dramatic , LITERALLY BADMOUTHING THE PEOPLE AT THE JOB THEY ALREADY HAVE , that's a red flag and they won't even be considered. ... the internet is forever.... I tend to weed negativity out of my life but occasionally I'll see someone post about their job in a harsh way but they'll tell me "oh but my boss doesn't follow me on SM" and I laughed, cuz they see everything.... 😁😁😁 not that I'm in any kind of a corporate setting ; I'm in residential construction... but I'm not stupid

I can’t understand why anyone has a problem with this. She literally said everyone that gets the opportunity has the skills/experience needed, so of course how well a person is going to work with their colleagues or within a certain companies practices is vital when filtering the prospects.

i’ve had a department head heavily try to recruit me & when i pointed out he had a temp who’s dying for the job & is way more qualified than me, he went, “yes, but who would people rather be stuck in an elevator with? if i’m with him, i’d shoot my foot just so i don’t have to talk to him.”

As a hiring manager, I’ve rejected SO many, on paper, great people because of their lack of soft skills. The best advice I can give to any young person trying to get hired now (take it or leave it). Learn how to be charming. personable. polite.
