@tiparenting_: Speak to your children about ADHD, autism, disabilities and other additional needs. It is called education. Your child will go to school, work and live alongside people whose brains, bodies, communication and behaviour may look different from theirs. Some children may rock, fidget or tap. Some may struggle with eye contact. Some may find noise overwhelming. Some communicate differently, need more time to process information, or respond to situations in ways your child may not immediately understand. That does not make them “weird.” And by the time our children are old enough to notice these differences, they should also be educated enough to understand that not everybody experiences the world in exactly the same way. We cannot prevent every unkind interaction, but we can make sure ignorance is not being carried from our homes into classrooms. Talk about ADHD. Talk about autism. Talk about disability. Talk about different learning and sensory needs. Your child does not need to understand every diagnosis. They do need to understand how to treat another human being with dignity. Perhaps some bullying would reduce if more children were taught why their peers may behave differently before they were given the opportunity to ridicule those differences.
