the important thing about gulags is that work there took from around 10-12 hours and prisoners had to march sometimes extremely long distances back and forth in harsh conditions just to work, also food rations were split into 3 groups: the best rations which might be the ones shown in the video were for the people who met 125% of the quota or higher, less food was for the people who were between 125% and 100%, even less were the people under 100%. a very easy way to understand how bad that is, is that the worse you did the less food you got which ment that you would do even worse. your chances to move up a group were virtually impossible, you could only go down and when you were at the lowest one you basically already died. also the food they got made prisoners lack important vitamins which made a huge amount of prisoner have night blindness, lose their teeth. people often mutilated themselves just to be put into the hospital where they were treated somewhat better and they got some more vitamin rich food. it was also extremely common for people to sell their bodies, especially women who had "camp husbands" which were basically men who would use that women's body and gain protection from grape from other men. the way people got into concentration camps for absurdities like: shooting a portrait of Stalin while drunk and getting accused of attempting to kill him, he got tortured so badly that he himself started to think that he did try to kill him, or an actor who played a role too well and was seen as a traitor. and while I'm talking about who got put there it's also important to mention that the time you were put there for pretty much didn't matter, some people stayed years just to be told after completing their sentence that they actually need to stay for twice as long. some of my sources for this are "A World Apart: The Journal of a Gulag Survivor."

you mostly dindnt get food my great grandpa was in a gulag for almost 20 years withot reason and during that time one of his legs dried up because it was that cold

remember that their food quantity was dependent on the work their done. If you did 100% of quota you were given little food.

Have not read The Gulag Archapelago, but I did read A day in the life of Ivan Desiovitch. What is missing from the soup is the rotten fish. The irony of the story, was that it turned out to be one of Ivan's better days. The camp life was a living Hell!

My grandfather was in the Syberian gulags, from what he has told me, if you got to eat that much that day, it would be the happiest day of your life. They used to boil leather to make it soft enough to eat, so I wouldn't say that this is a very accurate depiction of the amount of food and the spices used(they had almost no salt and sugar)
