I already saw the film and... my worst fears were real. The Manananggal is the typical "villain that is not a villain but instead is a misunderstood victim that redeems herself" cliché antagonist, which has me very tired since I already saw it in multiple films, specially Toy Story 5 and Spider-Man Brand New Day which came out this year and adding forgotten island to that formula in 3 in a row is too much. Besides, I always hated this trending of turning the monster into a misunderstood creature that wasn't evil before, it takes away what a monster is supposed to be; evil, frightening and unnatural. Guillermo del Toro has done that cliché in many of his films and seeing it in this one is also too much. I had enough with Nimona, Predator Badlands, Alien Earth, and many many other stories of the sort and it's too lame. It seems that movies are turning what is supposed to be evil into something we must understand and give a hug or a therapy session. I say exactly the same with Batiba; turning from a selfish manipulator to a misunderstood individual in few seconds is nonsensical. I would've been better if the Manananggal was just a predatory creature that hunts and kills for sadism and power and Batiba stays evil (I mean, come on, she's a demon, and demons are supposed to be always evil as they are evil incarnate) for all the whole film. It's so disappointing, more from the same people who wonderfully wrote Big Jack Horner.

Hear me out. Manananggal was full of hatred because everyone didn't like her before he got those memories batibat exchanged. The question is? why did Manang exchange something precious to Batibat? and who did Batibat open the portal to in order for that person to back to the mortal realm? I have a feeling this has to do with Jo's lola. Jo's lola was a fan of manananggals, maybe--- the day when her lola went to forgotten Island, she made a bond with manang, more like Ryza & Jo's bond. Before Manananggal met Jo's lola, she was very angry and lived a miserable life since everybody hates her. but when her lola came, they made memories and manananggal learned to be happy and calm because of her. But when Manananggal knew that in order for Jo's lola to go back to the mortal realm, they must sacrifice their precious memories, and just like Jo, Manananggal chose her own memories in exchange for lola trip back to the mortal realm.
