It is an opportunity for the school leadership and staff to understand what is expected, identify possible challenges and prepare properly for the term ahead. Here are 10 important areas every school should discuss. 1. GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE NEW TERM The school should clearly communicate what it hopes to achieve during the term. This may include academic improvement, better punctuality, improved classroom management, stronger communication with parents or better staff collaboration. Example: If students performed poorly in Mathematics last term, the school may set a goal to improve students' understanding and performance through regular assessment and additional support. Experience: A school may begin a term with many good intentions, but if the goals are not clearly communicated, teachers may work in different directions. 2. TEACHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Every teacher should know their responsibilities before students resume. Discuss class responsibilities, duty schedules, clubs, assemblies, supervision, record keeping and any additional assignments. ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS AND LESSON PREPARATION The meeting should address lesson planning, curriculum coverage, assessments, homework, marking and academic records. Teachers should understand what is expected from them and when important academic activities should be completed. Example: The school may require teachers to prepare lesson plans before teaching and submit continuous assessment records at specified times. 6. COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS Schools should discuss how teachers are expected to communicate with parents. Staff should understand what information can be shared directly with parents and when a matter should be referred to the school head or administrator.
