I love Gaelic place names, they are very descriptive of the actual geography. My standard grade geography teacher would do map sessions in physical geography where we studied a map of an area and had to link the Gaelic (and sometimes Scots) names into their geographical feature. Stuck with me to this day and when I see a new name I can't help but try to work out what it means. My local favourite was Cambuslang, a mixture of Scots (Lang =long) and Gaelic (Camus=curved bay or bend in water) because it is at a long bend on the Clyde. It helped show us the relevance of Gaelic we used every day in local place names despite being an English and Scots speaking area.

Excellent information,thank you for promoting Gaelic from someone whose mother tongue should be Gaelic but whose mother was ashamed of speaking Gaelic because she was punished for speaking it in her school in Lewis! She had to learn English when she started school aged five. Horrible system!!!

To what extent do you think that the politics around this, especially in relation to anti-independence parties messaging, fuels the linguicide of Gaelic and Scots, and therefore the loss of this traditional environmental knowledge embedded in the landscape through language. I imagine the clearances, the stripping of the people from the land, left behind language deserts, much like they left behind ecological and cultural deserts 😞
