They’re not tendons at all. The Giant’s Causeway rocks are columnar basalt. Basically lava cooled and cracked about 60 million years ago and formed around 40,000 interlocking columns, mostly hexagonal. It’s the same way mud cracks into hexagons when it dries, just on a huge volcanic scale. That’s why they look so perfect and man-made, but they’re totally natural basalt rock.
