sadly this happened with the US exotic mantis hobby. 10 years ago we had a LOT of cool exotic mantises.. well, it started gaining traction and all the sudden rare species were going to normies who in some cases have never raised a single mantis before... and the captive bloodlines died out because emotional people wouldn't send their males out on breeding loan because "i dont want to risk him getting killed" or refuse to breed their female mantises because "i just want to be a keeper, not a breeder." combined with the fact that importing new mantids legally is basically impossible unless you are a zoo or university because of environmental containment risks means we dont have half the cool species we used to. I once raised plistospilota Guineesis a decade ago (the African mega mantis) and now the blood lines in captivity stateside have all died out. very sad and why i support breeders who only sell to and trade with other mantis breeders until the captive populations in the US are well established like the orchid mantis is.
