When I interview candidates for a role, I always look past the traditional, rigid rules of what an interview "should" look like. People bring water all the time, and we always offer coffee or water before we start a conversation. So if a candidate walks in holding their own coffee, that is completely fine by me. As a Director, I want candidates to bring their authentic selves to the table. I want them to know that modern corporate spaces welcome who they truly are. If evaluating a candidate’s potential comes down to whether or not they brought a coffee to an interview, then you are losing out on incredible talent. Staying too rigid is exactly how corporate culture breaks down. We should focus on capability, alignment, and authenticity—not arbitrary rules

I love how peole think it's about the coffee. It's not. It's about understanding situations in the business environment. I am (relatively) high up in my company. If I was going in to present to the C Suite, I wouldn't bring one and I've been with the company 2 decades. We are looking for differentiation in the candidates. What upside is there to bringing it? None. Would you wear jeans? Ball cap? t-shirt? None of those change your "qualifications" either but you won't do that I'd bet.

It’s not unprofessional. If someone doesn’t show up with a coffee especially in big tech you will be brought to the coffee station or latte cart to get one. I asked my husband too who is a senior leader in big tech and he said he does not care if someone brings a coffee with them and has zero weight as to whether he hires someone or not.

Here’s the thing and I keep saying this and they don’t wanna listen. Do I particularly care about the drink or the iced coffee on a personal level? No. On a professional level, I can have my own ideas, but what I can’t control is the perception of our clients. And when you interview, I’m not only looking at how you’re presenting yourself to me. I have to think about how our clients will see those things- and I wish people would realize it’s not just about the iced coffee- and what I can’t control is our clients. And they are the ones that pay our bills and pay the salaries and keep our company running.

While bringing a beverage to an interview is understandable, walking in with an iced coffee often projects a casual vibe. This can inadvertently give interviewers the impression that the candidate lacks seriousness or interest in the role.

I hope yall continue bringing yall iced coffees leaving the water rings on the desk. Bring a whole chicken if you want and eat it right there in front of them. Guess who's coming to interview after you, you guessed it...the person with no iced coffee. Someone that can actually read the room.

My favorite comment about this debate is that it shows a lack of planning. Most of us drink caffeine in the morning, but we wake up early enough to drink it before an interview. You don’t drink anything in an interview unless it’s offered to you to drink.

So many people keep hearing this advice and immediately say “no I’m going to do it anyway” like it’s an attack on them. It doesn’t matter how you feel about what’s professional and what’s not, until you are on the other side of that hiring desk it’s not up to you. She said it best, they aren’t going to say the coffee was the reason, you will just get a “thank you for your time but we are going with someone else” email.
