Dabke is the Palestinian traditional dance 🍉🇵🇸 This project is a tribute to a Gazan man who danced the Dabke and the Dance of Freedom, which is a dance for the indigenous citizens of the US and Canada. He did this dance during the Gazans’ protests against the Israeli occupation while he and his friends were in Israelis’ sniper fire range back in 2018. His moves tell the world that we Palestinians shall know nothing but bravery! Hence, we wanted this project to pay tribute to this brave man. In our video, a Palestinian performer, @ghaliajum3aaa made the exact moves wearing an outfit similar to that of the Gazan hero; his identity remains unknown until now. What’s the origin of the Dabke in Palestine? There are many theories; one is that people in villages would stomp on the rooftops of houses together to compress the material to prevent cracks from forming. This eventually evolved into the dancing form of Dabke that is known today. Dabke is an exuberant, joyful form of traditional line and circle dancing originating from Middle Eastern culture and Bedouin tribes. Large groups interlock arms, tap and stomp with their feet, and sing or chant. Their purpose is to share historical narratives and vibrant folk legacies. We perform Dabke at our weddings, cultural events, and protests 🙌🏻 We aim to shed light on the art and culture of Palestine to humanize the storytelling narrative about Palestinians as news outlets tell our stories as if we are soulless numbers.
